What’s WRONG with the ABH ‘Subculture’ palette?

August 2, 2017

Anastasia Beverly Hills are back with a sister palette to the much loved ‘Modern Renaissance’ palette, and it seems like the whole beauty world (and world in general), have been going crazy over this new release.

With this palette only launching last Tuesday on the ABH official website, I knew that I had to add it to my collection as the MR palette is one of my holy grails of all holy grails. The palette features 14 shades, most of which are new eyeshadows, and feature a range of colours from pinks and reds, to dark blues and vibrant shimmers.

However, I am going to start by saying that this palette is not worth the money at all… and here’s why.

Firstly, I found some of the shades to be difficult to blend- especially the shades, ‘Untamed’ and ‘Axis.’ Disappointingly, these were the two shades that I was most excited to try out as I don’t normally go for any other eyeshadow colour other than reds and oranges (are you with me?!)

Next, I found that some of the shadows *cough* New Wave *cough*  had a lot of fallout. Normally, I’m not that fussed with fallout as there’s no such thing as a perfect eyeshadow. Fallout = high pigment as you will see in the Modern Renaissance palette. However, there’s a difference between a bit of harmless fallout, and half the eyeshadow colour spiting at me. On the other hand, I would like to point out that ‘New Wave’ is easier to blend than ‘Untamed’ ‘Axis’ so not all the matte shades in this palette are a battle to blend with.

And now onto the shimmers. If you’ve followed my blog or YouTube over the past few months, you may be aware that ABH shimmers are my favourite shimmer eyeshadows ever. They give any look such a glamorous pop, and most of the time don’t even need a bit of help with water (even though that does make it even more pigmented than they already are).

I first gave ‘Cube’ a go, and man it confused me. I totally forgot that it was a duo-chrome eyeshadow so I dipped into my white shimmer as you do to end up with a pink eyelid. But that isn’t all bad, in fact, I love that aspect of it. Next up was the one eyeshadow I was itching to use the whole tutorial, ‘Electric.’ From what I’ve heard and seen from this palette, this green toned shimmer really adds a major pop… and it’s green?! So I gave it a try. And it was definitely worth the wait. Even though I didn’t get to try out ‘Adorn,’ I would say that the shimmer shades were highly pigmented, and did not let me down.

Overall, do I regret purchasing this palette? No, as it’s so different to anything I currently own. But do I think it’s worth the money? Definitely not. I am a massive fan of Anastasia Beverly Hills, and will always back their products, but this palette was a let down for me. Compared to how well the Modern Renaissance was formulated, and how well it blended, this is on such a lower level to me. I don’t know what has gone on with this palette, but it definitely wasn’t what I expected.

Do you own the new ‘Subculture’ palette, and if so, what are your thoughts? Leave your opinions in the comment section below!

Love and happiness always,

xo, Becca

  1. I’ve heard so much about this palette and honestly I don’t think I would buy this. I saw a twitter post the other day and the color Roxy was very powdered. If that makes sense. The colors are gorgeous though, maybe they should fix the formula.

  2. So disappointed because I bought this palette too! Such a good review, wishing I had saved my money x

  3. I’m actually so glad I didn’t end up purchasing this palette! It’s such a shame as the colours are stunning. Hopefully they’ll make some changes to it.. Great review xxx

  4. You have made up my mind Becca! I’ve heard they’re found to release a new batch of them which could be better quality, so I’ll see what reviews are about then!! Lovely photos by the way! Xx

  5. I want this palette so badly, it’s honestly stunning, but the reviews! Some people are saying it’s horrendous and some people are saying it’s not actually that bad. It might be a case of saving it for special occasions when you have time to blend more & getting used to a different shadow formula x

  6. Thanks for the thoughts you share through this website. In addition, numerous young women which become pregnant never even attempt to get medical care insurance because they have anxiety they probably would not qualify. Although some states currently require that insurers supply coverage no matter the pre-existing conditions. Costs on these kind of guaranteed options are usually greater, but when thinking about the high cost of medical treatment it may be your safer route to take to protect your financial future.

  7. I’ve seen a few other reviews for this palette and none of have been very positive. I’m happy to know that at least the shimmers are good because ABH shimmers are my fave as well. I wonder if the company has, or will, issue a statement regarding all the not-so-positive feedback. Great review though, and your video was good too!

  8. It’s such a shame that you don’t like this palette as the colours are so lovely!
I am on the lookout for a new eyeshadow palette but may give the Modern Renaissance one a go instead 🙂

    Dani x

  9. It’s SUCH a shame that this palette got such bad press. I really love all the colours but I’m not really great at makeup as it is and I feel like this would just be disastrous for me to work with!

    Great review!

  10. I’ve been um-ing and ah-ing over this palette since it came out. It looks amazing but the negative reviews are putting me off big time! I agree with you it’s not worth the money but yes I probably will still get it! xx

  11. The thing I don’t like about palettes is that I’ll usually have one or two “go-to” shades and hardly use the rest, then the ones I like run out and I don’t know what to do with the others!

  12. I have this palette and I totally get what you mean. I managed to get a decent blend with a few but not all. I do use the darker ones as liners for the outer corner of my eyes. But if I would have had a trial with the palette before purchasing, I prob wouldnt have.
